This project combines six levels of car parking, retail, commercial space and cafes with terraced public spaces and a green roof. This project represents the first phase of our medium-density masterplan for the Bircham Park Care Quarter, part of a ten-year regeneration of Derriford hospital and the surrounding neighbourhood.
The design brief set out two clear objectives: firstly to remove on-grade parking and release land for future development and secondly for the building to improve the patient’s and staff’s arrival experience.
The topography, with its significant change in levels, drove the design and layout. The car park is a ‘scissor section’ that follows the slope. This organization provides dual entrances delivering cars at different levels and subsequently avoiding congestion. The floorplates of the car park step in section and shift in plan to accommodate the sloping terrain. In doing so, they create walkways, terraces and areas of shelter around the building that extend into the surrounding landscape. Facades are softened with metal and timber latticework, ivy and climbing plants.
