Converting an Industrial Area into a Mixed-use Neighbourhood by Combining High-rise Living with New Civic Amenities and Existing Workspace.
How can we regenerate the European city using new modes of urban intensification, new structures for orchestrating urban change and with new tools for changing people’s perceptions?
On an industrial site in Grenoble, this prize-winning project is an attempt to seed a new, high-density ‘urban ecology’, to attract back into the city people who are escaping to the suburbs for more private space and a higher standard of living. The site’s attraction lies in the intimate qualities of the streets, in the architectural quality of the industrial buildings and monuments and in the intriguing arrangement of courtyards and wild garden spaces between buildings.
Our design is a two-fold strategy - introduce slim housing towers across the site and re-colonise the industrial terrain with activities, public spaces, work studios, atelier spaces and gardens. A wide range of apartment types, car parking, collective gardens and city functions are accommodated within the towers. The transformation of the ground into a network of lively streets fosters the conditions for new and vibrant city neighbourhood.
